Here's five things to know this month:

1. Women's Ministry // TeaOlogy Nights

Village Church Women’s Ministry is hosting two evening gatherings this winter for all women to come together for hot drinks, fellowship, and discussion on various topics regarding the Bible and Theology. Our first one is coming up this Sunday, January 13th. You can register online. It's only $3!

January 13th: Tools for personal Bible Reading
February 10th: God's Great story: Following His storyline from Genesis to Revelation

2. Men's Ministry // Winter Bible Study

All men are invited to join the men of Village Church for a six-week study through First Peter, taught by Pastor David and others.

Each night will include teaching, small group discussion, and fellowship together. This is a great chance to grow deep in your knowledge of Scripture and get connected with other men of Village Church.

Already signed up? Stop by the Reading Plan Resource booth this Sunday in the back of the sanctuary to pick up your book.

4. 2019 Bible Reading Plan

We hope you are enjoying being in God's Word together with our 2019 Reading Plan. If you haven't started, it's not too late to dive in. Our 2019 reading plan is an adapted version of the "M'Cheyne" reading plan, a well known and loved plan put together by the 19th century Scottish minister Robert Murray M'Cheyne, and used as the reading plan for D.A. Carson's devotional, "For the Love of God."  This particular reading plan gives us about four chapters of Scripture each day and will lead us through:

The Old Testament (once)
Psalms (twice)
The New Testament (twice)

We are really excited to be doing this together, and we believe it will be a tremendous blessing to be reading God's Word together in alignment as a church throughout 2019. You can find all the digital resources on our Reading Plan Page.

5. New Series This Sunday: God at Work

We are excited to begin a brand new series in the Book of Daniel starting this Sunday. As we study this book together over the next few months, we will see some stories that are familiar to many of us, and look deeply at many chapters in Daniel that are perhaps a bit less familiar.

Each Sunday we open up Daniel together, we will be reminded that we serve a God who is always at work - in every place and every moment.

Our hope is that we will come away from this book with a greater understanding of the character of God and a greater delight in His sovereign power to work all things for His glory among the nations. And we pray that God will use His Word to encourage our hearts in whatever circumstances we face today, knowing that God is at work in our own individual lives as He has been since the beginning.

See you Sunday, Village Church!

Politically Correct Christians https://www.villagechurchirvine.com/community-blog/post/politically-correct-christians https://www.villagechurchirvine.com/community-blog/post/politically-correct-christians#comments Mon, 05 Nov 2018 19:00:00 -0800 https://www.villagechurchirvine.com/community-blog/post/politically-correct-christians So, I’m assuming I grabbed your attention with the title of this blog post.

I’m also assuming there are many reasons for that – one being the nature of the term ‘politically correct' in our current cultural context.

Truth be told, the term ‘politically correct’ has meant many things since it was introduced into the English language in the late 1700s – likely both in ways you would and would not resonate with.

What I’m meaning by the term ‘Politically Correct Christians’ in this post is simply this: Christians who have a biblically correct view of the political process and act in biblically correct ways toward everyone involved in that political process.

Now, I know that’s a mouthful, and there are volumes that can, and have been written on this topic, but I’ve found the Apostle Peter, of all people, has boiled it down for us into four, biblical, ethical, practical and simple ways we can both think correctly and act correctly in the political process we will be involved in this week.

I believe the Apostle Peter would describe ‘Politically Correct Christians’ as those who:

Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

(1 Peter 2:17 ESV)

(1) Honor Everyone

The word ‘honor’ (timaō) here means, “to fix the value of.”

The word ‘everyone’(pas) here means, well, “everyone.” Every politician. Every pundit. Every partisan. Every race. Every ethnicity. Every gender. Every socio-economic group. Every religious group.  Everyone.

This makes sense to us as Christians, right? This is obvious to us as Christians, right?

This does and this is, because this is what we see in the beginning – that every person is created in the image of God with dignity, value and worth (Genesis 1:27-28). There is no person who is intrinsically worth more or less because of their political affiliation or part in the political process. Their value has been fixed by God because they are created by God and in the image of God.

So as you engage in the political process this week, honor everyone. Honor them in what you think about them, say about them, feel about them or post about them.

Honor everyone.

(2) Love The Brotherhood

The word ‘love’ (agapaō) here means, “to love without condition.”

The word ‘brotherhood’(adelphotēs) here means, “Christians.” All Christians. Republican Christians. Democrat Christians. Independent Christians. Green Party Christians. Every Christian.

This makes sense to us as Christians, right? This is obvious to us as Christians, right?

This does and this is, because this is how Jesus said people would know we are in fact Christians – by our love for one another (John 13:34-35). There is no Christian who deserves more or less love because of their political affiliation or part in the political process. They are loved by God, without condition, and they should be loved by us, without political conditions.

This is one of the things that disappointed me most during the past election cycle. It seemed to me that most Christians did a better job of ‘honoring everyone’ than they did ‘loving the brotherhood’. This shouldn’t be. This doesn’t have to be. By God’s grace this week, this won’t be.

So as you engage in the political process this week, love the brotherhood. Love them in what you think about them, say about them, feel about them, or post to or about them.

Love the brotherhood.

(3) Fear God

The word ‘fear’ (phobeō) here means, “to be in awe of or afraid of.”

The word ‘God’ (theos) here means, well, “God – The God of the Bible.”

This makes sense to us as Christians, right? This is obvious to us as Christians, right?

This does and this is, because God is the only One we should ultimately stand in awe of (Ps.33:8). God is the only One we should ultimately be afraid of, in the most reverent and respectful kind of way (Ps.33:8). There is no one, certainly no politician, partisan or pundit that deserves more of our awe and respect.

So as you engage in the political process this week, fear God. Think  and talk about Him and His place in the political process with awe and respect. Believe Him for His place in the political process with awe and respect.

Fear God.

(4) Honor The Emperor

By now you may have thought you can and you will honor everyone, love the brotherhood and fear God. But honor the Emperor? Can you do that? Will you?

The word ‘honor’ (timaō) here is the same word Peter used earlier for ‘honoring everyone’. It means, “to fix the value of.”

The word ‘emperor’ (basileus) here means, “leader of the people.”

This makes sense to us as Christians, right? This is obvious to us as Christians, right?

This does and this is, because this is how Peter says we are to act toward those in authority over us politically (1 Peter 2:13-16). There is no President, Congressperson, Senator or Governor who is intrinsically worth more or less because of their political party or ideology. Their value has been fixed by God because they are created by God and in the image of God, like the rest of us, no matter what value we might be tempted to take away from them because of their political affiliation or disposition.

So as you engage in the political process this week, honor the emperor. Honor them in what you think about them, say about them, feel about them or post about them.

Honor the emperor.

Will you be a politically correct Christian this week?

Will you have a biblically correct view of the political process and act in biblically correct ways toward everyone involved in that political process?

Their value has been fixed by God because they are created by God and in the image of God, like the rest of us, no matter what value we might be tempted to take away from them because of their political affiliation or disposition.

So as you engage in the political process this week, honor the emperor. Honor them in what you think about them, say about them, feel about them or post about them.

Honor the emperor.

Will you be a politically correct Christian this week?

Will you have a biblically correct view of the political process and act in biblically correct ways toward everyone involved in that political process?

2. ON THE BLOG: Politically Correct Christians

The term ‘politically correct’ has meant many things since it was introduced into the English language in the late 1700s – likely both in ways you would and would not resonate with.

Fear God. Honor the emperor... (read more)

Practical Application for doing Retreat with Jesus https://www.villagechurchirvine.com/community-blog/post/practical-application-for-doing-retreat-with-jesus https://www.villagechurchirvine.com/community-blog/post/practical-application-for-doing-retreat-with-jesus#comments Thu, 06 Sep 2018 07:00:00 -0700 https://www.villagechurchirvine.com/community-blog/post/practical-application-for-doing-retreat-with-jesus The REALITY regarding retreat is that we GET to spend personal time alone with God, because of what Jesus has done. We don’t HAVE to spend time with God because of what Jesus has done. We have an INVITATION not an OBLIGATION ….. To private, personal and extended time with God. This is AMAZING.

Why do a Retreat?
1. For extended fellowship with God, beyond your morning devotions. It means just plain being with and thinking about God. God has called us into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:9). Like many personal relationships, this fellowship is nurtured by spending time together.

2. For renewed perspective. Like flying over the battlefield in a reconnaissance plane, a retreat gives an opportunity to think of the world from God's point of view. Especially when going through some difficulty, we need this perspective to sharpen our vision of the unseen, and to let the immediate, tangible things drop into proper place. Our spiritual defenses are strengthened while we "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For . . . what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18).

3. For prayerful consideration of our lives before the Lord — like a personal inventory and evaluation. You will especially want to take a retreat and make it a day of prayer when facing important decisions, as well as on a periodic basis. On such a day, you can evaluate where you are in relation to your goals, and get direction from the Lord through His Word.

4. For adequate preparation. If God has given us plans and purposes in these times alone, we will be ready when opportunity comes to move right into it. We won't have to say, "I'm not prepared." The reason many Christians are dead to opportunities is not because they are not mentally alert, but they are simply unprepared in heart. Preparation is made when we get alone with God.

Scheduling your time Divide the time into 4 parts:
1.    Wait on the Lord—to realize His presence, to be cleansed, and to worship Him.
2.    Read Scripture. - Start with Philippians or Psalms. Read slow. Take it in.
3.    Pray for others. Ask specific things for them. Use Paul's prayers in the New Testament to pray for them, and pray for them what you are praying for yourself.
4.    Pray for yourself. Be totally honest with God, and yet not too introspective. (In many cases, a person will do better to pray for himself before praying for others.) As Lorne Sanny said, "You will end the day worse than you started if all you do is think of yourself and your own problems."
Making a worry list
1.    Give some thought to current conflicts, problems, concerns, or frustrations, and write them down and number them. List anything that is "bugging" you. No matter how small an item is, if it is of concern to you, list it.
2.    Every worry you have in the world should be on that piece of paper—it is all there! When you are satisfied that this is so, go on to step three. (It is not uncommon for a person to have 20 or more items.)
3.    Go through the list item by item. On each item determine whether you can do nothing about it because it is beyond your control, or whether you can do something to resolve it.

Whatever your conclusion, pray about each issue. But if you feel you can take action about it, write down what you plan to do. (You will probably find many other things to add to this "do list" throughout your time of prayer.)
What to take with you
The *essential items* to have with you are a Bible, paper, and a pen or pencil. Other helpful items include:
A clock or watch
A favorite devotional book
Your current prayer list
Music
Your quiet time journal
Some food
Water (Jesus wants you hydrated)
A hymnal Scripture
Notes from your last extended time in prayer
A calendar
How to stay awake and alert
1.    Get adequate rest the two nights before.
2.    Change positions-sit a while, walk around, sit, walk, and so on.
3.    Have variety in what you do. Read the Scriptures, then prayer, then write, and so on.
4.    Pray aloud—in a whisper or soft voice if necessary.

Taking notes
Taking notes during your retreat will give you a record of the things the Lord is speaking to you about, and also help you keep your time organized. In addition, when we pray we often have something come to mind that we feel we should take action on, or that we have forgotten to do—perhaps totally unrelated to what we are praying about. By keeping paper ready to list these things so we can act on them later, we can avoid prolonged distraction.

Toward the end of your time in prayer you will want to spend fifteen minutes or so writing down some conclusions. Summarize the major impressions of your time. Keep these notes in a notebook and review them weekly for a while. This will ensure that you follow through on the things God has impressed on you.

Conclusion- Two Questions to END
"The result of your day in prayer should be answers to the two questions Paul asked the Lord on the Damascus road (Acts 22:6-10). Paul's first question was, 'Who are you, Lord?' The Lord replied, 'I am Jesus.' You will be seeking to know Him, to find out who He is.

The second questions Paul asked was, 'What shall I do, Lord?' the Lord answered him specifically. This should be answered or reconfirmed for you in that part of the day when you unhurriedly seek His will for you.

"Don't think you must end the day of a retreat with some new discovery or extraordinary experience. Wait on God and expose yourself to His Word. The test of such a day is not how exhilarated we are when the day is over but how it works into life tomorrow and the next day and so on. If we have really exposed ourselves to the Word and come into contact with God, it will affect our daily life.
